Becoming an LVN in Los Angeles

In the city of Los Angeles there are 4 post-secondary educational institutions offering LVN programs to students.  Of the entire population of nurses working in Los Angeles, LVNs comprise about 25 percent of them. In the coming years, the LVN profession in Los Angeles is expected to grow.

Depending on whether the LVN student is enrolled full or part-time will determine the length of time it will take for him/her to complete the program. Curriculum for LVN programs will generally include a mixture of in-class coursework, lab sessions, and clinical practice.

All four of the LVN programs in Los Angeles have been approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.

Schools That Offer LVN Programs in Los Angeles, CA

Career Development Institute

Career Development Institute was originally founded in 1998 by Janis K. Newton. For 20 years CDI has been offering unique educational experiences for its nursing students. Additionally, CDI offers its students small class sizes, free tutoring services as well as free job placement after students successfully complete the program. The program takes 13 months to complete.

Admission Requirements:

  • Speak with an admissions representative
  • Take entrance exam which consists of 105 questions covering basic math, reading comprehension and grammar
  • Complete an interview with a director from the school and meet with the financial aid officer
  • Submit the following documents:
    • California Driver’s License
    • Social Security Card
    • High school diploma, GED equivalent, associate’s or bachelor’s degree

Marian College

Marian College in Los Angeles was founded in 1992. The college specializes in helping students realize their goals of securing a career in the nursing and healthcare industries. Students enrolled in Marian College’s LVN program typically take between 14 and 18 months to finish, depending on whether they chose the weekday or weekend schedule. The college’s LVN program seeks to impart the necessary skills to students that will provide them the best possible opportunity to successfully procure employment at any clinic, hospital, physician’s office, or long-term care facilities hiring LVNs. Marian College’s LVN program, which is conducted on-campus only, emphasizes both nursing theory as well as the development and implementation of nursing skills. In order to successfully complete the program, students most obtain minimum grades of C (75% or better) in all Vocational Nursing course work.

Application Requirements:

  • Have completed high school or have a GED equivalent
  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Show proof of a valid social security number
  • Be free of any physical or emotional impairments that could possibly hinder or restrict performing clinical tasks
  • Take and pass the entrance examination
  • Complete interview with a faculty member

American Career College

American Career College, now a cornerstone of the Southern California healthcare community, was originally founded in 1978 as American College of Optics. Currently, ACC serves more than 2,500 students throughout its three campuses scattered throughout Southern California. ACC offers students thirteen different degree and diploma programs.

Like other LVN programs in the country, ACC’s program is meant to impart the necessary knowledge and skills needed for LVNs to readily enter the field in settings like medical offices, acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities and other healthcare clinics after they have graduated. ACC prides itself teaching it’s students essential skills like leadership, proper patient interaction, and others.

Courses to be completed during LVN programs include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Introduction to Client-Centered Care Module
  • Care of the Client with Health Care Deviations
  • Advanced Client-Centered Care

Following the completion of the LVN program at American Career College students will be able to conduct the following tasks:

  • Administering medication
  • Collecting samples for lab tests
  • Recording vital signs

Admission Requirements:

  • Take and pass the HESI entrance exam with a score of at least 70% or better in addition to passing an entrance exam
  • Applicants must pass a background check
  • Applicants must pass a drug screen
  • Pathology tests, health screens and immunizations should be carried out prior to any clinical nursing assignments being carried out

Angeles College

Angeles College was founded in 2004 and has since assisted hundreds of students in reaching their educational and career goals. The college offers some of the most up-to-date training facilities in some of the fastest growing career disciplines.

Angeles College’s Vocational Nursing program takes 52 weeks to complete for full-time students and 72 weeks for those attending part-time. That’s 1800 hours of training—640 hours of theory and 1050 hours of lab and clinical practice. During this period of intensive instruction, nursing students learn medical terminology, medication administration, proper patient care, body growth and development as well as various nursing procedures and patient care assessments.

Courses to be completed in Angeles College’s LVN programs include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Psychology
  • Fundamentals of Nursing
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Maternity Nursing
  • Pharmacology
  • Medical Surgical Nursing

Admission Requirements:

  • $50 registration fee
  • Complete application enrollment agreement
  • Be at least 17 years old
  • Be in possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent certificate
  • Demonstrate verbally reasonable expectations of benefits from the course (academic progress, skills acquisition and job marketability)
  • Complete Wonderlic and HOBET Exam with an adequate score
