Jefferson Community and Technical College

Originally established in 1968, Jefferson Community and Technical College is a publicly funded, 2-year community college in the city of Louisville. JC&TC is the largest member college of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. It serves 11 counties in the region.

JC&TC offers students a 50 semester-credit hour Licensed Practical Nursing program that has been approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing. The program can be completed in just three semesters (approximately one year) and is offered at its Downtown campus and Carrollton campus. The program is composed of a mixture of in-class lecture and discussion, on-campus labs, and a clinical internship at a local healthcare facility. While enrolled in this program, students will take courses like Pharmacology, Development of the Caregiver Role, Introduction to Health Deviations, Mental Health, and more.

Admission Criteria:

  • Have a state certification as a nurse’s aide (SRNA) or CNA
  • Have completed Anatomy and Physiology I with a C or better
  • Complete the Digital Computer Literacy or IC3-Fast Track exam with a score of at least 750

Galen College of Nursing – Louisville

Galen College of Nursing – Louisville is a private nursing education institution that was first established in 1990. GCN – Louisville is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education and is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

GCN – Louisville offers students an LPN program that is composed of a total of 1,440 clock hours – 600 hours of theory and 840 clinical hours. Students can choose between a 12-month full-time option which meets during daytime hours, and a 21-month part-time program which meets during evening hours. During the course, students will be exposed to courses like Integrated Human Sciences Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, and Pharmacology. This program admits students four times a year, in January, April, July, and September.

ATA College

ATA College was originally established in 1994 as an educational institution specializing in the information technology field. In 2003, the college began focusing on allied health education and training. ATA College is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

ATA College offers students a Practical Nursing program which is taught by experienced nursing faculty and can be completed in 15 months. During the program, students undergo a combination of in-class lecture and discussion, on-campus lab skills practice and off-campus clinical experience. Included in the program’s curriculum are a variety of NCLEX-PN preparation exams that will adequately equip students with the nursing knowledge and critical thinking skills that are required for success in the field. At the end of the program, students will be prepared to work in home health, surgical clinics, long-term care facilities, skilled care units, hospitals, and more.

Sullivan University

Sullivan College of Technology and Design, a private career training college, was originally chartered in 1961 under the name Louisville Technical Institute. It was later renamed in 2009.

SCTD’s Practical Nursing program is composed of a total of 87 credit hours and can be completed in as little as 12 months. The program is offered during daytime and evening hours. During the program, students will spend 594 hours in a clinical environment. Unlike many LPN programs, SCTD’s focuses not just on what LPNs need to do, but why they need to do them. The holistic care model is particularly emphasized in the program. The vast majority of SCTD’s nursing faculty are specialists in their respective fields and most are still practicing in the field. Courses that students can expect to take during the program include Personal & Vocational Relationships, Health Deviations, Management of Geriatric Clients, and others.
