There are two post-secondary educational institutions in Austin, Texas which offer LVN programs to prospective nursing students. Of all the different kinds of nurses currently employed in the healthcare field within the city, LVNs comprise 23% them. Unlike many LVN programs across other cities and states throughout the country, LVN programs in Austin are only offered to students in campus-based formats. Every one of the post-secondary institutions which offer LVN certificates in Austin require applicants to have obtained a high school diploma or GED equivalent before matriculation into the program.

Austin Community College

Established in 1972, Austin Community College (ACC) is a network of community colleges which serve students in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area, in addition to the neighboring communities of central Texas. ACC serves approximately 100,000 students across its various campuses, making it the sixth largest community college system in the US and the fourth largest single community college in the state of Texas.

For students to earn their vocational nursing certificates, they are required to complete 43 unit hours over a timespan of three semesters, which takes place in settings that include the classroom, laboratory, and clinical sites.  ACC’s LVN program is designed to prepare its graduates to administer the very best nursing care for a wide variety of patients.

Perhaps the program’s greatest emphasis is based on imparting specific knowledge and skills to students to give them the ability to make sound clinical judgments in a wide variety of situations.

Admission Criteria:

Potential students seeking to enroll in ACC’s LVN program must:

  • Be at least 17 years old and have completed high school or GED equivalency
  • Complete any and all immunizations required for the program
  • Students musttake and pass the TEAS examination prior to submission of application
  • Complete the Vocational Nursing Program Information Session
  • Verify and sign for Eligibility – BON Licensure requirements prior to submission of application
  • Obtain and submit official academic transcripts for classes taken at all schools other than ACC
  • Although there aren’t any explicitly required pre-requisite courses for the LVN program at ACC, prospective students are encouraged to complete the following courses with at least a grade of ‘C’ or better prior to matriculation:
    • Anatomy & Physiology I
    • Anatomy & Physiology II
    • Pharmacology for Health Care Professions
  • Submit to and pass a criminal background check
  • Take and pass a toxicology/chemical substance test

CyberTex Institute of Technology

Founded by Iqbal Sheikh in 1999, CyberTex Institute of Technology (CIT) began with a vision of providing alternative career training to the general public. Mr. Sheikh’s vision was conceived from a wish to ‘provide new career paths for displaced individuals at the lowest possible cost’. CIT’s programs are flexible, and as soon as students have met the eligibility requirements, they are able to begin at the next available program start time. The curriculum includes classroom courses and labs, along with hands-on experiences. Some of the courses required include:

Admissions Requirements:

Specific admissions requirements for the LVN program can be obtained by contacting the college directly. General admissions requirements for CIT include:

  • The ability to read at a basic 8th grade level
  • Provide the college with a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Score at least 70% or higher in reading portion of the TABE assessment (Test for Adult Basic Education)
  • Prospective students must have a proficient command of the English language
