Becoming an LPN in Philadelphia

Last Updated/Verified: Aug 5, 2024

Philadelphia’s LPNs constitute over a quarter of the currently employed nurses in the city. Most often they can be found working in private practice doctor’s offices, rehabilitation centers, outpatient care centers, hospitals, and home health organizations. Each of the post-secondary institutions in Philadelphia offering LPN certificates requires, at the very least, for applicants to have obtained a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Depending on whether the student is attending full or part-time, LPN programs in Philadelphia can be completed in one to two years. These programs are comprised of a mixture of in-class, laboratory, and clinical learning hours.

Upon successful completion of the LPN certificate programs, students will be fully prepared to work under the command of doctors, nurse practitioners (NPs), registered nurses (RNs), and other high-level healthcare professionals. LPNs should be well equipped with the proper skills and knowledge to effectively care for sick, injured, or disabled people, in a wide variety of settings. More specifically, following graduation, LPNs will be able to potentially perform the following medical procedures:

  • Monitor catheters
  • Prepare and administer enemas and injections
  • Assist patients with dressing, washing, and the overall maintenance of their personal hygiene
  • Assist in feeding patients
  • Measure and record vitals
  • Help patients with their mobility

Each LPN program in Philadelphia is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
